The BBC has just reported yet another story of a young woman from a dysfunctional home situation in Britain heading off to Syria for the hope of a better life with ISIS. Only in this case it didn’t quite turn out as planned, leading Tareena Shakil to return home to Britain (which also didn’t turn out as planned since she has been found guilty by a court of being a member of ISIS).
Significantly, Tareena Shakil was fleeing domestic abuse when she went to Syria to become a terrorist’s wife. This fits with a pattern that I keep seeing in the reports about the sorts of women who head to Syria to become Jihadi brides. Although young people decide to join ISIS for a variety of reasons, often the movement attracts woman who are not from the families of devout and pious Muslims who want to max-out on piety, but women who are socially marginalized and whose lives seem to have reached a dead-end.
When presented with the challenges of Islam, it seems that the tendency within Western culture is to continually vacillate between trying to make the Muslim a community completely beyond critique, on the one hand, and a knee-jerk hysteria of any and all Muslims, on the other. It seems that the former creates enough public frustration that the latter becomes an inevitable consequence. If this is true then it is in the best interest of the Muslim community to start encouraging the type of robust debate that so many of them have been trying to suppress. Here is an article I wrote a while go for Christian Voice about the suppression of free speech in Britain that has happened under the banner of tolerance towards Islam (but which has nothing to do with true tolerance).
In the recently printed Spring 2015 edition of Salvo magazine, I have a feature in the Society section, in which I talk about the relationship of ISIS terrorism to the modern world. Drawing on the work of scholars who have specialized in the psychology of terrorism, I point out that the terrorists who make up ISIS are often very far removed from genuine Islam. Quite often people join ISIS’s terrorist playpen not because they are serious about Islam but because they aren’t.
In my Christian voice article on ISIS terrorism I explained that the goal of ISIS
is to eliminate all borders in the Middle East and establish a Caliphate under the monarchy of the terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a man wanted for $10 million by the Americans.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his thugs have exploited grievances felt by the Sunni community following their marginalization in the government America helped to establish under the Shia triumphalism of Nouri al-Maliki. After breaking off of Al-Qaeda, the group has gone on to control much of eastern and northern Syria and western and northern Iraq.
It is not simply the lawful governments of Iraq and Syria that have become the target of ISIS; they have also been exterminating the civilian populations on an unimaginable scale. Their regime of ethnic cleansing is slowly and systematically exterminating some of the world’s oldest Christian communities. ISIS has also been targeting Shia Muslims and all Middle East populations not associated with their particularly fanatical version of Islam.
When ISIS forces conquer an area they immediately impose Sharia law, including a ban on smoking, football and music. Women are forced to be completely veiled in black from head to toe and forbidden from leaving their house without a male guardian. ISIS thugs even routinely raid schools to punish girls who are not fully veiled in black. The less fortunate women are sold into sexual slavery.
ISIS has issued ultimatums demanding that all Christians convert to Islam, pay the jizya tax required of non-Muslims, or die. Last month we reported on a typical case of what happened when a Christian father could not afford this tax: three ISIS soldiers barged into his house and proceeded to rape his wife and daughter in front of him. The husband and father was so distraught that he later killed himself.
More recently, there have been reports that the holocaust against Christians has included youths being crucified and beheaded and buried alive and numerous other atrocities for no reason other than the fact that these children are Christians.
ABC news reported that in towns controlled by the group, “Friday is the day for public beheadings and amputations for people who violate its strict Islamic rule, and whippings for women if their clothing offends ISIS’ sense of propriety.”
The UN reported that “Civilians, including children, are urged to watch. Bodies of those killed are placed on display for several days, terrorizing the local population”
I have been accused by a man from Pakistan, commenting on one of my articles, of being “Islamophobic.’ The offending article was Part 1 in my series on the Islamisation of Britain. That particular article did not attack Islam at all, let alone Muslims, but that has not stopped it being labelled as “Islamophobic.”
In anticipation that my more recent article on Britain’s home-grown terrorism will illicit similar accusations, it may be helpful to share a few things I wrote earlier this year about how the idea of “Islamophobia” is being used as part of the Jihad against free speech. These observations come from my article “The Islamisation of Britain (Part 3): Censorship and Islamophobia“:
In 1786, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams met with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, Tripoli’s ambassador to Britain. The purpose for meeting with Adja was to negotiate an end to Muslim raids on American ships.
Jefferson and Adams later reported what the ambassador said when asked how he could justify such attacks. According to the report given to Congress, Adja replied “that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.”
Little has changed in the intervening years concerning Islamic hatred of Americans. What has changed, however, is that Muslims have become more cunning in their tactics. That is the subject of Robert Spencer’s book Stealth Jihad: How Radical Islam is Subverting America without Guns or Bombs.
This book takes up where Spencer’s 2005 publication, Review of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (And the Crusades) left off.
Below are links to my recent series for Christian Voice on the inroads that radical Islam is making into Britain.
